Downtown Murals
Jessi Gowan
Downtown McPherson is the site of several murals that are all within easy walking distance of one another including a Globe Refiners’ mural at Kansas and Ash, Easy Rider at Maple and Woodside, and the Coca-Cola mural at the McPherson Opera House.
The latest addition is a combined project of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, Central Christian College of Kansas and McPherson College depicting the auto restoration program at McPherson College. The 8’x40’ mural is located at Euclid and Main on a building owned by Hometown Tire & Turf. Students, faculty and the program's benefactors - - Smokey Billieu and Jay Leno -- are depicted alongside notable restoration projects completed by the program. Artist Mike Hall, a recent McPherson College grad, provided the sketches of each person and Central College Professor Naomi Ullum incorporated them into her design of the mural.
More murals are planned for the area, according to CVB Director Anne Hassler.
“We have a tremendous talent in Naomi and her students. Her expertise has made the mural projects possible. We hope to partner with her again to bring more murals depicting our local attractions, history and events,” Hassler said.
